October to March: peak season
Days are warm and nights are cool to cold, which is the best weather for safaris and evenings around the bonfire. December and January are the busiest months — book tents a few weeks ahead, especially around Christmas and New Year.
The Desert Festival
Jaisalmer's Desert Festival is held each winter, usually in January or February, with camel races, folk music and the Mr. Desert contest. Dates follow the lunar calendar, so check before you plan.
April to June: hot days
Daytime heat is high, so plan safaris for early morning and sunset. The air-conditioned Maharaja Swiss Tents are the best choice in these months.
July to September: monsoon
Rain is light in the Thar, but the desert turns a little green and there are far fewer visitors — good for quiet stays.
